Marvel just released news on the All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1 coming out in May 2017 from the team of Gerry Duggan, Aaron Kuder and Ive Svorcina, and will ship twice-monthly. I’ve been a HUGE Guardians fan since WAY back in the 80s and more recently when Richard Rider’s Nova put Marvel cosmic books (like Guardians of the Galaxy) back on the comic book stands in 2008. Now I’m REALLY Not a fan of the current “Grounded” story-line of the Guardians of the Galaxy stuck on Earth just for the sake of brand new comic series while it seems like the main Guardians of the Galaxy title pretty much dead in the water. I don’t mind the latest issue of Rocket Raccoon but prefer the character in the Guardians of the Galaxy prime book.
Now it looks like Marvel is going to sync the Guardians of the Galaxy with the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 movie including a muted, now-pacifist Drax (akin to a recovering alcoholic), a new looking Gamora, a similar movie looking Star Lord, Rocket Raccoon & a pint sized Groot. Gone are The Thing, Agent Venom (Flash Thompson) & Kitty Pryde. It’s a shame because I didn’t think that Bendis gave his last version of the Guardians of the Galaxy with Kitty & Ben Grimm enough time to click. I felt like for the last year, Bendis kinda “phoned in” his Guardians of the Galaxy run as it’s been so unappealing to the point of me wondering if I should keep reading. The recent Spidey fill-in issue seemed like such a waste of a comic about a cosmic hero team.
That said – Sadly, I don’t have high hopes for the new series. NOTHING so far sells me on the book. Nothing. It’s funny because I understand syncing a comic book series to an upcoming movie for better cross tie-in but in Guardians of the Galaxy case, the title is at it’s best when it’s NOT trying to be the movie. James Gunn himself said he was influenced by the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy run which had NO concept of it ever being a movie. I’d prefer Guardians of the Galaxy comic book to be original than being tailored to match the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 movie.
I don’t know what new creator news I was expecting regarding Guardians of the Galaxy once Bendis finally said he’s leaving the title after his 4 year run. Guess I should be happy it’s not James Robinson so I can continue reading the comic book.
Perhaps Gerry Duggan & team can put together a great new series for me to enjoy. I didn’t mind his Deadpool run & recent Marvel work but it’s NOT something I am going out looking for and/or looking forward to. It’s just kinda okay for me. Hope his All New Guardians of the Galaxy changes my mind.
OH and lastly, MARVEL needs to suck it & NOT Re-Releasing comic books with NEW Issue #1’s – let a comic series fncking GROW in it’s series numbering. THAT PISSES ME OFF MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE!
