Blake Undying Lives the Dream!

Blake Undying Lives the Dream!

Congrats to Jason Cook who’s Z2H online comic Blake Undying won the Harold Greenberg Fund sceenplay development. I should have mentioned this sooner that the four finalists had been selected and Abigail’s War one of the final four finalists. Sadly Abigail’s War did not win but it is noted that the Harold Greenberg Fund hopes to be working with the finalists in some way which is great news! Congrats to everyone involved, especially Jennica Harper who wrote (what I thought should have been the winner but I am biased, it wasn’t a SUPER HERO story) a kick ass comic book!

So the big question is What is Next for Zeros 2 Heroes and the Comic Creation Nation? Hmm? Will we ever see Abigail’s War #2, Gustav Hayes #2 or Blake Undying #2?

More here on Z2H:
http://www.zeros2heroes.com/component/option,com_feature/Title,HaroldGreenberg/

Great job by everyone involved! Congrats again Jason Cook!

UPDATE: My bad for spelling Jason Blake and not Jason Cook. I have revised, sorry all. I shouldn’t be making posts and rushing around with my laptop barely open.

Double Book Launch – WHAT IT FEELS LIKE FOR A GIRL & SHUCK

Are you in Vancouver tonight? You wanna go to something cool?

Double Book Launch – WHAT IT FEELS LIKE FOR A GIRL & SHUCK

WHAT IT FEELS LIKE FOR A GIRL by Jennica Harper

Wednesday, October 8, 2008
8:00pm – 11:55pm
Lick (next to Honey… how appropriate…)
455 Abbott St
Vancouver, BC
view map

Two hot authors with hot new books performing in one hot space! Join Daniel Allen Cox (SHUCK), Jennica Harper (WHAT IT FEELS LIKE FOR A GIRL), Allison Mack (Chloe on “Smallville“), and Billeh Nickerson for a celebration of sexy new lit.

Anyone who remembers, I worked with Jennica on Abigail’s War, her comic book apart of Comic Creation Nation with Zeros 2 Heroes. Tonight is the wonderful launch party at Lick in downtown Vancouver. Go and check this out! Here is more info:

JENNICA HARPER will be launching her new book of poetry, WHAT IT FEELS LIKE FOR A GIRL (Anvil Press, 2008). The book is a series of poems following the intense friendship between two teenagers as they idolize Madonna and explore the strange, titillating world of pornography. They soon learn just how complicated sexuality is—and how confusing desire can be.

Allison Mack of Smallville will be joining Jennica on stage for a performed reading.

Praise for What It Feels Like for a Girl:

“Smart, brave, hard-edged, and a little frightening… Jennica Harper offers a compassionate glimpse into the turbulent lives of teenaged girls. May this book find its way to school libraries. May it find itself in the hands of every young person who ever wondered What It Feels Like for a Girl.”
–Elizabeth Bachinsky, Governor General’s Award Nominee for Home of Sudden Service

Alright kids. Here you go, the new Zeros 2 Heroes Comic Creation Nation launch is happening! Now you can check out the books I have been working on, Abigail’s War & Gustav Hayes, plus all the other great books that got created.

I had a BLAST working on Abigail’s War mainly because I had the opportunity to work with two great people – Jennica and Sandrine! I enjoyed the fact that Abigail’s War is NOT your typical super-hero wham, bam comic book. It is a lovely story of a young woman trying to come to grips with her past and her future in a time past. I asked to be the editor on this book as I felt it had that Vertigo-ish feel to the story that Jennica wrote and Sandrine made come to life on the pages. Also a big shout out to Ed Brisson and his great lettering on the book that gave it such a haunting feel!

Gustav Hayes: Lounge Singer of the Apocalypse was written by Morgan Jeske, art by Daniel Bradford and Cristian Valdes, lettering by Chris Studabaker

This was a GREAT & FUN book to work on with Morgan and Daniel. This book has the potential to become a great series and I look forward to more issues of Gustav Hayes to come in the future as I know this will be a big hit! Morgan was wonderful to work with and already let me have a sneak peek at issues #2 & 3 and all I can say is that this first issue is just scratching the surface to a great world of Gustav Hayes! Oh and remember the name Daniel Bradford! He is a diamond in the rough to become a great comic book artist!

Please take the time to go through these great books (Mind Crimes, Minus Zero, Slaughter Inc., Rip Current, The Mix, Deutschmaschine, Alma: Jumbo the Elephant, Lotus, Knightcap: November’s Song, Black Jack O’Breen, Hero High, The Brothers McElroy, Blake Undying, Supremacy: Dawn of Heroes) and all the Comic Creation Nation books on the Zeros 2 Heroes site. Tell them which books you liked and didn’t like, voice up and give some great online support to these wonderful books! No — I get no extra monies or stickers for pimping this out. I did 99% of my work for the love of comics (sorry, Crackerbob, I know I owe yah $ for using that saying) and I would appreciate the support with all these great books. Did I mention that they are FREE to view online? Yes, FREE, just go to the Zeros 2 Heroes website and enjoy!

I am very happy and proud to be apart of these books! Kudos to all my fellow editors – Josh Aiken, Alex Cieslik  & Andrew Foley — an awesome team and good fellas that I learned a great deal from! A biug shout out to Matt Toner for the opportunity and belief in everyone involed, Julian Lawrence our Zen Master and head editor, Jessica Leigh Clark for her encouragement and support and the rest of the Zeros 2 Heroes crew for all their great work!

I still remember my first meeting with Z2H and how I ended up at the wrong office, scrambling to phone Jessica on my cell, trying to get my email with her number with my laptop out on the grass just across from the Stadium Skytrain station in Vancouver. I was a mess, so nervous and worried (for what, I still don’t know) and the meeting was great. Zeros 2 Heroes is a great company with a sh**t loads of potential! A big shout out to my friend Brett for the heads up on Z2H over a year ago!

*Robert looks up the skies, smirks and says* ” Hey Dad — I finished it but I ain’t done yet! “

Abigail’s War — Hoist the colors high

Abigail’s War Page 1 Colors by Sandrine Replat

As many may or may not know — I am an (associate) editor with Zeros 2 Heroes for the Comic Creation Nation campaign and working on Abigail’s War comic book.

Abigail’s War is a great story by Jennica Harper which has a lost innocence feel to it. The book is not your typical hero comic book but has more of a historic Vertigo feel. The “hero” is Abigail, a young witch, on the run from her past who is trying to find a brief moment to catch her breath while being caught up in the turbulence of the changing world her. Sandrine Replat is a french artist who is working extremely hard painting the pages with her stunning artwork. Ed Brisson has come on board to be the letterer on the book.

Our deadline for the beginning of July has made things a touch chaotic but in a good way. We are all working very hard to get the book complete. I am very fortunate to be apart of this amazing comic book creation process. Ensuring that everything is coming together on time and with the look and feel that the writer Jennica Harper envisioned. Zeros 2 Heroes ensures that the creators vision is supported throughout the process which is unlike some other companies which take the script and bang out a comic book. I work closely with Jennica and the art team along each step of the way.

Last of the Best Bang!

Last of the Best Bang!

Welcome to my Last of the Best Bang for yer Comic Buck. For over 10+ months, I have been doing the Best Bang, week after week and I only missed a few weeks. Sure the initial idea for the Between the Staples website was based on the reviews I wrote for the Happy Harbor website eons ago. Later I decided to make those reviews into its own website. It has been a great run and I would like to thank those at Zeros 2 Heroes for allowing me the Best Bang to be featured on the their blog website. I do feel that the Best Bang has lost its charm. Everyone and their dog are now blogging the bite sized reviews along with the old classic long ranting reviews. I feel it is time for a change so I plan to start putting my mind into other ideas for the website. I also will be directing my energy into other venues like my writing. I have spent much more time worrying about the Best Bang each week than doing my web work that pays for my addiction. That has to change so for now… this is the last Best Bang until it rises from the ashes in its new form.

So all that said, I am going to spotlight only a hand full of great books this week as I found that there was not much to be excited about. Batman, Might Avengers and the final wrap up for The Death of the New Gods (which obviously is being overlooked in Countdown which makes no sense). Given all the New Gods are gone and the Fifth World is close to coming together (or has), I find it fitting that their heads will be the ranking for the Last of the Best Bang. Comics from Hourglass Comics as I did not have time to make it to Elfsar Comics & Toys this week.
