RANT: Watchmen trailer hits the ‘net and BtS ain’t impressed!

July 17th, 2008 rjp Posted in Comic Books, DC Comics, Rants, Television / Movies, Watchmen 21 Comments »

Watchmen trailer hits the ‘net!

Heads up to Hartley who sent me an early email that the Watchmen trailer for leaked but I think soon after it did, the trailer went up all official on the Apple site here:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/watchmen/

As much as I enjoyed seeing the Owlship come out of the waters in front of downtown Vancouver (then CGI into New York is it?), I couldn’t care for what I saw and it really made me realize that I never wanted to see this comic book series (f***k GRAPHIC NOVEL, I know and understand that it got MUCH more popular via the graphic novel version but that doesn’t mean it EVER WAS ONE TO BEGIN WITH YOU IGNORANT F***KS DC COMICS! Ah hem…) as a movie. It would be like someone making my favorite childhood memory into a movie, it just won’t happen. I was not a fan of the new costumes and I still ain’t. Rorschach (aka The Question), looks far too CLEAN for my likings plus if that is the voice for Rorschach — how LAME, why another Batman/Christan Bale ripe-off (?), Night Owl (aka Blue Beetle) looks like Batman with Hawkman’s headpiece and in shape (WTF!?!?! — Anyone READ the WATCHMEN while making the movie?!), Ozymandias just looks BORING in black & greys plus what he’s all of 16 yrs old (and I mean BORING — like I would prefer the plastic ears of the 80’s Captain America costume compared to that sh*t), Silk Spectre looks frightfully like they really wish they cast ANYONE else, The Comedian (aka Peacemaker) looks like he’s still the only one having fun for the 2 mins he’s in the movie and Jar Jar… I mean Dr. Manhattan (aka Captain Atom) is yet another CGI character in a movie. *YAWN*

Seriously, is anyone excited about this movie? I sure ain’t, I know I will go see it just to be sure how bored I will be but I ain’t excited to see this movie, the trailer or the f***king action figures at SDCC this year at all. Nope.

Now make me The Question movie and I am all over it! Better yet, Ambush Bug!

Oh and here is one other thing that bugs that sh**t outta me while watching this trailer? Why are they not talking about the story itself? Why are not selling the line “Who watches the Watchmen?“. Why tell me, the viewer,  how f***king popular that graphic novel was / is or will be. F***k if I care, tell me about the movie yeah Yahoos! DC gets a FAIL on this marketing attempt!

My l♥ve for Doctor Who!

My l♥ve for Doctor Who! Journey’s End - Series 4 finale of Doctor Who!

Okay I will admit it, I really do l♥ve the BBC TV show, Doctor Who, and this weekend (thanks to the power of the ‘net) I got a chance to watch all of season 4 & the big finale (the last 3 episodes in one big sitting: Turn Left, Stolen Earth and Journey’s End). It was a great way to start feeling better & getting energy. The show may not appeal to all but it appeals to me on a big level. I loved the old shows and now the new Dr. Who is one of my favorite shows on the telly (even if its via DVDs/Internet). Thank goodness my PS3 can play DivX movies!

William S. can attest to the fact that I stopped watching the show after Christopher Eccleston  (who played the Ninth Doctor) and I could not get into watching David Tennant but after sitting down and watching seasons/series 2 - 4, I found out that I was stupid not watching until now. Granted much of my appeal for the 10th Doc ‘ta came from long discussions with William S. over coffees late in the next morning.

So what did I think of the 4th season/series finale — Stolen Earth & Journey’s End? Brilliant. Just brilliant! I became a sap and was tearful when it called for it (moment the Doctor and Rose finally meet-up), cheering on Jack, the Torchwood team, Sarah Jane Smith, Martha Jones (to me, on par with Rose Tyler as favorite companion!), the strength of Donna Noble and laughing out loud at 3 am when the Doctor / Donna pull the ace out of their sleeve! I loved how everyone that has been apart of the run of the new show was in the finale episode — one thing that doesn’t happen much on shows these days! Good job! One bit I was waiting for was the “what? What? WHAT?!” from the Doctor at the end of the finale episode but I think perhaps it had enough drama of the story that we needed to end on a dramatic bit than comedic.

Many thanks to Russell T. Davies (really EVERYONE) for the show and his swan song episodes if he truly is leaving the show! I cannot wait to go out and get these DVD sets now!Now it’s the long wait until Christmas 2008 episode (or a few hours after it airs for us ‘net folks)! Will David Tennant still be the Doctor? Who will be the new companion?

More about Sat night’s episode Journey’s End reaching 9.8 million viewers here:

I end this with two words for William S:

BtS RANT: Is Final Crisis like The Infinity Gauntlet?

So while I am still on my back pain meds this thought came to me. I stopped working on the Best Bang Reborn issue 3, I stopped working (not great but I needed to write this down) and I got thinking, writing and blogging…

RANT: Gawds I hate web 2.0 comic book websites!

June 4th, 2008 rjp Posted in Comic Books, Rants 6 Comments »

Gawds I hate web 2.0 comic book websites!

I know this will get me in trouble with certain people considering I work in web development but GAWDS I hate it when websites become “beta” with the stupid sunburst behind the logo, stripes, the HUGE widescreen look. Now hey Comic Book Resources looks like Newsarama which looks like Pop Culture Shock. First it was Chud.com which did the revamp, then along came CBR and now Newsarama followed suit.

Personally I like sites like Panels of Awesome which have a format but its not a BETA website which gives that “label” (excuse in my mind) that if things change, hey, it’s Beta and you should be expecting that. Blah. Think if the comic book store you went to kept changing the layout, structure at a whim — would you want to go back? How is that a good user experience?

I know I sound like a pain-in-the-ass about this ’cause I just revamped my own blog but I didn’t call it BETA nor did I change things on a whole. I just updated bits and pieces but the same look & feel remained.

Newsarama was one of my favorite websites to visit and now I groan when I see it. It looks so bloody corporate now, it makes me just want to gloss through it — I want the pre - dot/beta version of the site back for old curmudgeons like me. *le sigh*

RANT: Comic Continuity have Sex Appeal?

RANT: Comic Continuity have Sex Appeal?

So I have to ask/rant about this as it has been bottled up inside me for a while now. Does Comic Continuity have Sex Appeal? Do you prefer to read a big event in the books you pick-up OR would you prefer to ignore the event in what you are reading unless you want to read it apart of that book — then you pick-up the event book tie-in (like The Fantastic Four: Secret Invasion mini-series vs The Fantastic Four current book)?

600th blog post? WTF? That many. No Freaking Way!

Yeah, thanks Wolvie, I can barely believe it myself. Big thanks go out to Zeek, Weston and of course William S. along with supporters like Elfsar, Chris @ ComicHacks.com, crackerbob @ fortheloveofcomics.com, Panels of Awesome (great looking blog!), blog@newsarama.com, aeComics and others. It was a huge year for me personally and a big year for the blog with guest bloggers, more exposure through Zeros 2 Heroes and getting reviewed on G4 Attack The Show (nothing better than hearing Olivia saying “Good job, Robert)! William, Zeek, Weston and I really wanted to do a podcast from Elfsar before the end of 2007 but that didn’t happen so look forward to that in the coming month or so!

Check out some of my other blog posts on the Zeros 2 Heroes blog and follow the progress of the Gustav Hayes comic book here:

Thanks to everyone! I plan to keep working hard to keep this blog alive and half decent.

Venom and Bile

November 20th, 2007 rjp Posted in Comic Books, Rants No Comments »

Is this the real William S? You decide!

William S. says…

For probably longer then I should I’ve been hacking away at colour commentating for Robert on this his comic blog of blogs and I want to thank Don Bob for this great honor he has granted onto me here this day… ha, sorry it was a joke that just got away from me. Any who, even though I have access to the back end and could post on my own if I wanted I’d rather slum it out in the feed back/comments section with the rest of you comic mooks because well actually blogging here might go to my already considerably swelled head and then the next thing you know it’s all 4000 word rants about plot holes, poor characterization and wide screen photos of my favorite tit shots. Which I’m sure would go over well with a select few but certainly not the majority.

I’ve tossed around a lot of venom and bile about the Marvel Marketing Machine and how hopelessly languid it seems to be. I’ve felt that I should take the time to set my true feelings down in easily digestible bit sized chicken mac’nuggets of wisdom, but hell if I know how to write those. So instead I present you with Matt Maxwell’s clever scribbling.
