Between The Staples - Between The Staples by Robert J. Parizek and is just another comic book news blog with a hint of lemon from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

BtS on Hiatus

TOP_Comics_TOP_01

Well I’ve met to post this for a while now but it’s pretty bloody obvious that this blog is on a hiatus now.

not-approved-comic-codeThis blog has a history that was tied to a certain comic book store in Vancouver, Canada (You know, where the 2010 Winter Olympics were) called ELFSAR COLLECTION COMICS & TOYS. Sadly Elfsar had to close down in May so in many ways, it’s closing has also put the final nail into the coffin of this blog. If I had ANY thought of returning and sparking this sucker up, it’s all gone now. Elfsar was the spark that had me start REALLY bad reviews over on Happy Harbor Comics website. That went on for a while until I thought, why not just start my own blog doing the same thing and ranting about whatever else I wanted. So I did and BtS was born. It went through many looks & feel until finding the latest incarnation. Now don’t get me wrong, I do miss it at times but overall I think running this blog took a great deal out of me in ways I haven’t still realized. I managed this blog almost as much or more than working 8 hours a day and that got to be too much in general. That and I feel my appreciation for comic books lately has been at an all time low so I have little to talk about.

I know many friends I know wished I kept the blog up and running but never truly understood it was like feeding a forever hungry zombie… and I FUCKING HATE Zombies!

So for now the blog is again on a Hiatus. If you feel the fucked up strange need to listen to my rambles, you can catch me on Twitter here:
http://twitter.com/RobertParizek

I’m not closing up shop as I like the digital footprint this leaves so feel free to browse and lick the carpet, you might find something you like. That said, I’m closing the comments now for the entire site and all older posts.

Happy Hallows Eve!

Happy Hallows Eve '09!

I know it’s late but I hope everyone had a great Halloween weekend! I am still recovering after a long day of pumpkin carvings, a busy day (managed to hit Elfsar for their Halloween Free Comic Book Day & good to see all!) and then freezing my butt off on Hallows Eve while giving away a zillion bits of candy plus lots & lots of comic books! Here are some of the pumpkins I did…

Halloween '09 Pumpkins - Spider-Man, Michael Myers & Werewolf

UPDATE: I wanted to mention that I may rant & rave how Blackest Night does NOTHING for me but I did give away TONS of Blackest Night #0 on Halloween although Archie & Star Wars: Clone Wars Free Comic Book Days books were the most wanted! New Avengers and some Disney’s Cars & Donald Duck books were also popular.

X-Men & My Dad

Uncanny X-MenThis week I have been thinking about my father a great deal. I realized that my father was a huge part of my comic book addiction, especially The X-Men. I found that I have these memories of the X-Men comic books & my father.

Uncanny X-MenWhen I was young, little kid, I got a big toy chest with the American flag on it from my parents (the irony ’cause I am a Canuck). It became the central place for all my toys. At around the same time, I used to get comic books from the local hospital where my mother worked. Every week, new comics came into the childrens floor and the old comics, once read by all the kids, were given to my mum to take home for me. I was very lucky and they had all these old issues of Superman, Detective Comics, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman & The X-Men. I remember this because one day I was watching either Captain Kangaroo or The Friendly Giant and I got the idea to line the inside of my toy chest with comic book pages. SO I went and cut out pages from these used comics and glued them into my toy chest. Later I looked back to see I had almost a full run of John Byrne’s X-Men run glued on the inside of this toy chest. Once the free comics ran out, my father realized how much I loved them and went out to the local corner store and bought me a bunch. He kept this up for a while until he showed me where he was getting them and told me if I worked around the house, I could get an allowance & buy then my comics.

Uncanny X-MenOnce I realized I could get comics from the local corner store, it then became fun adventures with my friends to find other comics from other corner stores ’cause not everyone got the same comics or had older issues on dank, dusty stand down around with the candies. So week to week, I would go finding these comics where I could & feed my addiction that way. This continued and got more serious when I went on a trip with my father to Los Angeles. Every time we hit a gas station along the way, I went scavenging for more issues of Marc Silvestri’s X-Men run where Storm lost her powers, Rouge just joined the team and they were in San Fran for the first time.

Uncanny X-MenLater when my parents split up, I fell deeper into my comic addiction going all over the North Shore to find corner stores for certain new comics or older issues. When I used to go with my father on weekends, we always used to go out to other corner stores so I could search out comics I didn’t have. This became apart of our routine during the time we spent together as he had moved out so we hung out on the weekends. This continued until I hit high school and at that time did I hear about and visit the first Comic Book store in my life — The Comic Shop out on West 4th Ave in Vancouver, Canada. Now this store (and others) had been around for a while but I never got to see them when I was younger.

New X-MenIn the summer of grade 9, my father made the decision to move to Los Angeles for work. I ended up staying up in Vancouver with my mother & sister but I did visit my father each summer from that point forward for most of my life. Each time I went down to LA to see my dad, we always went to find comic book stores around and my dad NEVER had problems with me buying and reading comics. He was happy that I was reading. Granted at times, I am sure he wished I had more hobbies than just comics — computers being another hobby which became a big part of my life, another big part of my life I shared with my father. It was after my second trip to LA that I came back to Vancouver and found many comic book stores in North Van, where I lived, and they became my new hang out. I kept reading The X-Men up and until soon after Jim Lee restarted the book back in the 90’s until my interest weened around the time I stopped going to school and had to get out into the work force. From the point forward, I would pickup the X-Men when I could but it wasn’t until Grant Morrison’s run on the X Books did I come back for a bit and again during Matt Fraction’s run.

The X-MenFor most of my life, I have been buying comics & my father was always supportive of my comic book hobby. Whatever issues I had with my father, this was one of the best things that we shared. I used to ramble to my dad for hours about all the comics I got and he never told me to shut up or saying that he wasn’t interested. He just listened and at times made little jokes about what I said but most of them time he enjoyed hearing more tell him all the comic book stories I had just read with a little smile on his face. This is one of the best memories I have of my father & I still have the toy chest. :)

Kudos to Cover Brower website for the covers!

The 600

600th blog post? WTF? That many. No Freaking Way!

Yeah, thanks Wolvie, I can barely believe it myself. Big thanks go out to Zeek, Weston and of course William S. along with supporters like Elfsar, Chris @ ComicHacks.com, crackerbob @ fortheloveofcomics.com, Panels of Awesome (great looking blog!), blog@newsarama.com, aeComics and others. It was a huge year for me personally and a big year for the blog with guest bloggers, more exposure through Zeros 2 Heroes and getting reviewed on G4 Attack The Show (nothing better than hearing Olivia saying “Good job, Robert)! William, Zeek, Weston and I really wanted to do a podcast from Elfsar before the end of 2007 but that didn’t happen so look forward to that in the coming month or so!

Check out some of my other blog posts on the Zeros 2 Heroes blog and follow the progress of the Gustav Hayes comic book here:

Thanks to everyone! I plan to keep working hard to keep this blog alive and half decent.

Marvel Comics Annihilation: Conquest

annihilation-conquest-ani.gif

Okay. I must gush about how Marvel is doing a great job with the whole Annihilation comics and storyline. I just picked up Annihilation Book 1 in trade and even though I had the singles, reading it all together was AMAZING and I look forward to the rest of the Annihilation books (3 of them I believe). From the art to the wicked story the Ann takes you on a wild ride through the space opera that is the Marvel Comics Space Universe sans The Shi’ar since they are apart of the X-Men Universe.

Some tidbits on the new Annihilation: Conquest mini-series coming oddly enough also on Nov. 7th!

Arcana Comics – Dark Horror 2 coming Nov. 7th!

arcana-dark-horrors-2-cover.jpg

I meant to post this yesterday but I took the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend to be offline (for the most part) and spend time with the family. That said – Arcana Comics has finally announced that their Dark Horrors 2 anthology title is *hopefully* coming out for Nov. 7th (Nice! Day after my birthday! Woo Hoo!).

Why am I mentioning this? Well…

Once again Arcana goes to the most fearsome stories in a tale so eery it could only be called Dark Horrors. The second installment of Arcana’s popular Dark Horrors Anthology is set for a Halloween release and the winning creators who submitted work for the book were recently announced. A special congratulations to following, who will grace the pages of Arcana’s horror offering:

Gerrin Tramis — The Last Job
Ed Quimby — Time Lost Land; “Heather”
Phil McClorey — Scottish Pride
Jason Whiton –Farewells
Eve Grandt — I Dare You
Bart Thompson — Love Sprouts; Identity
Dan Fleming — Ticking Away
Michelle and Kelly Everaert — Prize Catch; “Mermaid”
Martin Fisher — Any Cost for Life
Miguel Caceres — Dark Side of Theo Wunderlich
Dave Collins — Blood Harvest
Scott O. Brown — Whale Song
Egg Embry — Ghost Train
Robert Tinnell — Reunion
Robert Parizek — Blood Stain
Jonathan Baylis & David Beyer Jr — In the Head, Please

As you can see my 6 page comic will be published in that book so go out and pick up a copy. I have seem the some of the submissions by the other creators and they are GREAT! Wonderful work by all!

You can order this book using Diamond Code AUG073375 at your LCS!

As far as I know this will be an Arcana Comic and not a Platinum Studios Comic as per all the news of Sean O’Reilly, the Editor In Chief of Arcana, accepting a position at Platinum Studios.
Newsarama has details on that here:
