The future of comics?

Apple Tablet to move the future of digital comics?

Is the upcoming rumored Apple tablet the future of comic books? Will this be the death of your local comic store in the coming years going from being just a comic book store to becoming a GEEKS-R-US store with everything plus maybe some of the limited printed versions of some digital comics. More on this maybe every Wednesday morning the new comics will published new on iTunes & productivity drops at those times. Could that be the future of comic books?

Sure that it far fetched and not everyone is going to have a new Apple tablet to view their digital comics on but doesn’t almost everyone have a computer / laptop these days & running some version of iTunes? How much of a stretch is this considering the costs involved in printing comic books over digital publication.

I do not see this happening overnight but I would imagine in a few years, the comic book industry will change a great deal and more towards a digital media. Look at the big MarvelFest event today in New York for the launch of the Astonishing X-Men motion comic (likely will come out in a zillion months for us up here in Canada — LAME!) so why not feel that the comic biz is changing.

Shit, I wonder how comic book conventions would be if most of the comic books came out online?! Would fans still travel to San Diego Comic-Con to get digital signatures on their latest download of their favorite motion comic.

Best Bang Reborn #17 Comics for Nov 26 & Dec 3

Best Bang Reborn #17 Comics for Nov 26 & Dec 3

Hey all. Here we go – Best Bang Reborn for a few more weeks so much like Jean Grey coming back to the Marvel Universe, this too will go the “Dead is dead” world (where, much like the comic book universes, it can just crawl back to life one day) but until then lets look at 2 weeks worth of comics from November 26th and December 3rd! Such sh*t stuff like Secret Invasion, Batman RIP and The Umbrella Academy came out (okay UA ain’t sh*t).

This week I got my addiction from Hourglass Comics & Toys out here in the ‘burbs of Port Moody, British Columbia Canada. Many images are courtesy Comic Books Beta and unfortunately no additional images for the book this week so its just all plain text blog post. I know, how boring but I like to think… how retro! :P

The Hartley Show: Sept 22/08

[flash http://www.youtube.com/v/fAhGBkTKPkY&hl=en&fs=1 w=400 h=324]

Hartley dishes out his love for Superman, Batman, Action Comics, Geoff Johns (gah, I do hope Johns doesn’t end up a DC version of Bendis for me) and then his dislike for Checkmate #29 along with the rest of his reviews on Action Comics #868, Brave and the Bold #15, Flash #243, The Last Defenders #6, Green Lantern Corps # 27. Since most of these titles, I do not pick-up, I can’t say if they are good / bad so yeah.

I did love both The Last Defenders #6 & Green Lantern Corps # 27 so we agree on those books!

Here is Part II with Booster Gold #11, Justice League of America #24, FireBreather #2, StormWatch #13, and the Midnighter trade vol. 2.

Hartley is too nice on Justice League of America #24 — the Zatanna bit where she just appears out of no where was LAME and I am huge Dwayne McDuffie fan but yeah, I think I ranted about this issue on this BtS Best Bang Reborn here (scroll down, I gave it two leafs outta five!)! That said, I completely agree with regarding StormWatch: Worlds End book. Hartley’s review of the Midnighter trade has me interested in the book, might pick it up now.

DC & Dark Horse Solits for Dec 2008

DC Solits for Dec 2008

No Messed Up Solits (I think that feature needs some tweaks / more intelligence than I have at this moment) but only DC Comics Solits for Dec ‘08 tonight. Vigilante by Marv Wolfman, Detective Comics & Batman by Dennis O’Neil, Milestone characters come back in Justice League of America, James Robinson on Superman. Man that takes me back and something great to look forward to in December this year from DC Comics! Enjoy.

The Harley Show Sept. 14th episode!

[flash http://www.youtube.com/v/QHzYcI1EFLc&hl=en&fs=1 w=400 h=324]

Oh goodie goodie goodie, more Hartley than you can shake your Secret Invasion & Final Crisis variant covers at! If you are tired of reading my bite-sized reviews then kick back, crank this up and enjoy Hartley’s reviews!

Oh and stay tuned, Hartley maybe “blogging” here (if I can pry him away from all his fun tv/movie work and/or City of Heroes addiction) also maybe a BtS appearance on an upcoming episode of The Hartley Show? You just never never know (and never is a good word for me since my days can turn to sh’yate in a phone call)!

Books reviewed: Hawkman Special #1, Astonishing X-Men #26, Iron Man: Director of SHIELD, Fantastic Four #559, Avengers / Invaders #4 of 12, Ghost Rider #26, Batman / Superman #51, Buffy the Vampire Slayer #17 and Fray trade paperback from Dark Horse.

My thoughts / two-bits: I have to agree with the Hawkman special (which I flipped through and don’t understand why DC is messing up Hawkman). I liked AXM but I agree that often Warren Ellis are more miss than hit for me. FF just does not flip my boat anymore, it is a mess, it is not the Fantastic Four that I want to enjoy. Avengers/Invaders, I am trade waiting that book so I can’t say.

I enjoyed Hellboy II: The Golden Army!

I enjoyed Hellboy II: The Golden Army!

So thanks to Elfsar Comics & Toys, William S. and myself went off to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army last night. I am still a wreck from being up way too late talking, comics, the movie, and life.

I really enjoyed the movie! I thought it was a great sequel because it was NOT a clone of the previous movie. I loved Johann Kraus (voiced by the great Seth McFarlane) but what I enjoyed the most was the interaction between Liz and Red (Hellboy). Ron Perlman just was Hellboy perfectly, Selma Blair did a great job as Liz Sherman and Doug Jones stepped up as Abe Sapien (and a ton of other characters). I enjoyed that Abe finally got a chance to be the “Reed Richards” of the team through-out the movie and the team comes together in the end which to me was what was so enjoyable. I also was having a man crush on Luke Goss as Prince Nuada, the villain of the movie (If Luke Goss was Cyclops in the next X-Man movie — that would be it for me!). Anna Walton as Princess Nuala was nice and cute but really I did not see her doing anything some other actress couldn’t do.

I felt that Guillermo del Toro wanted to bring the fantastical to life in this movie and he did but was it too much? I am sure some people will think so but I loved seeing it because we do not have many movies as such. Given the books and all the wonderful adventures the team gets into within the comics, I really loved seeing all the fantastical in the movie. Would I see it again? Hell yeah, it’s Hellboy! Would I recommend the movie? YES — go and enjoy yourself in the fun of it all!
