Are you ready for Sylar as Spock? A young punk J. T. Kirk? Nick Angel as Scotty and Ben Cross coming out from a rock to be a villain?
Well I am but at the same time I feel I need a great deal of salt to deal with how much they plan on changing EVERYTHING in the Star Trek world. Will it spin off new movies and shows? Hmm?

It’s just so different.
Really.
I mean it might revolutionize the franchise, ie kick it in the butt like it needs to be, but is this the direction it should be going in?
One thing I know is that if this movie bombs Star Trek is dead – for at least a decade. Enterprise could have been something but they screwed it up hard, Voyageur was weak before it, 90210 (I mean DS9) lost me early on and could never pull me back…
The franchise has just complete deadwood since First Contact.
DR
DS9 was 90210 to you? Well that’s just crazy talk.
Personally I like the look and feel of this movie, based solely on the trailer, I know, I know, it’s a fool’s bet to base any opinion of a movie only on it’s trailer, but this just looks like it’s going to be fun.
I’ve been missing ST on TV, not because I’m a Trekhead but because when it was making money the other TV studios were willing to splurge for other TV shows in similar vains. With it gone you can notice the down turn in SF on TV. It’s all X-Files-esque (Ha, take that English language. Choke on that word.) in orientations. BSG was the last love child of the ST era, and it will be gone soon… so no more space opera on TV.
But along comes the new movie. Sure the die hards will scream about it deviating from cannon. (Good morning Robert, care to play) But who, cares? Over and over we comic book dorks see canon messed with, re-booted, re-wired, sent into a crisis, or basically mangled, and a lot of times good stuff comes out of it. Yes, they’re are exceptions, list them for me if you need to. But the point is the franchise will survive, and if we are lucky prosper (Ha, who didn’t see that coming?) and with it’s prosperity hopefully a desire to bring SF back to our boob tubes in a big way.
You know what? I am ready for a change, sure I loved the old ST stuff, especially DS9 – huge fan, but I agree that no ST on the telly means no more SF on the telly.
Change it all – what do I care? I don’t have rides and parts of hotels built to look like the old cannon ST world.
Trek needed a change and hopefully it works out. If they didn’t give it a shot, they’d be dead in the water like they were once Enterprise ended. Paramount even sold Startrek.com at one point if I remember correctly.
Between the new Massively Multiplayer Online RPG and the movie I hope they can spin up enough entrance for a new TV franchise.
Not that I’m lacking for TV sci-fi, having finally gotten caught up on stuff like Fringe, True Blood, and Terminator Chronicles. But more space opera is always wanted.
I am a HUGE fan of the original series (not so much the others, except maybe season 4 of Enterprise, and a smattering of NG and DS9 episodes), and above and beyond anything else this new film just looks FUN.
And I don’t mind if they fiddle around with some of what we believe is “canon”. I’m actually hoping there’s a LOT that’s unexpected, otherwise we could have one boring movie on our hands.
So I think I’ll sit back, relax, and try and enjoy this reboot (yes, it looks like it WILL be a reboot, despite what they say) with an open mind.
I mean, c’mon guys, its Kirk! NEW KIRK!
