Watchmen trailer hits the ā€˜net!

Heads up to Hartley who sent me an early email that the Watchmen trailer for leaked but I think soon after it did, the trailer went up all official on the Apple site here:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/watchmen/

As much as I enjoyed seeing the Owlship come out of the waters in front of downtown Vancouver (then CGI into New York is it?), I couldn’t care for what I saw and it really made me realize that I never wanted to see this comic book series (f***k GRAPHIC NOVEL, I know and understand that it got MUCH more popular via the graphic novel version but that doesn’t mean it EVER WAS ONE TO BEGIN WITH YOU IGNORANT F***KS DC COMICS! Ah hem…) as a movie. It would be like someone making my favorite childhood memory into a movie, it just won’t happen. I was not a fan of the new costumes and I still ain’t. Rorschach (aka The Question), looks far too CLEAN for my likings plus if that is the voice for Rorschach — how LAME, why another Batman/Christan Bale ripe-off (?), Night Owl (aka Blue Beetle) looks like Batman with Hawkman’s headpiece and in shape (WTF!?!?! — Anyone READ the WATCHMEN while making the movie?!), Ozymandias just looks BORING in black & greys plus what he’s all of 16 yrs old (and I mean BORING — like I would prefer the plastic ears of the 80’s Captain America costume compared to that sh*t), Silk Spectre looks frightfully like they really wish they cast ANYONE else, The Comedian (aka Peacemaker) looks like he’s still the only one having fun for the 2 mins he’s in the movie and Jar Jar… I mean Dr. Manhattan (aka Captain Atom) is yet another CGI character in a movie. *YAWN*

Seriously, is anyone excited about this movie? I sure ain’t, I know I will go see it just to be sure how bored I will be but I ain’t excited to see this movie, the trailer or the f***king action figures at SDCC this year at all. Nope.

Now make me The Question movie and I am all over it! Better yet, Ambush Bug!

Oh and here is one other thing that bugs that sh**t outta me while watching this trailer? Why are they not talking about the story itself? Why are not selling the line “Who watches the Watchmen?“. Why tell me, the viewer,Ā  how f***king popular that graphic novel was / is or will be. F***k if I care, tell me about the movie yeah Yahoos! DC gets a FAIL on this marketing attempt!

  1. Man I hate the wanna-be comics snobs that insist Watchmen is a Graphic novel and not in fact a comic, missing out entirely that its technically a trade paperback collection of a 12 issue comic book series.

I will watch this movie and *sigh* sadly probably enjoy it much the same way I did 300.
But there’s a part inside of me that is just flat out angry at how dumbed down a version of Watchmen this already is.

Snyder missed most a great many of the elements that makes 300 such a great comic, and has already shown Watchmen is in the exact same category of mass-audience rape-age.

Too bad they didn’t get Nolan for Watchmen or somebody of his caliber cause Dark Knight knocked me on my ass!

  2. And just for the record I’m glad that you’re spewing the hate!
I hate myself for knowing that I’ll enjoy the flick despite my Watchmen Obsession right from ish#1 in what was that 1986?
Man I’m still buzzing from Dark Knight…

Holy great movie, and everything Watchmen won’t be able to touch.

  3. Dude, the trailer looks awesome.

This does raise a good question though: Should all comic series/graphic novels be made into a movie?

    Something to ponder…

  4. I’ll say again what I said the first time I heard there was going to be a Watchman movie; “Watchman is the number one comic I want to see made into a movie and the number one comic I never want to see made into a movie.” Yes I know its a contradictory statement.

As a comic we all agree the story was a watershed moment, it will always ring to us fan boy obsessives as ‘the greatest’ therefore anything that follows it, grows from it will be a lesser product. You can not follow ‘the greatest’ with greater, that’s improbable. But only because people are mulish and refuse to let go the concept that you can evolve a property, or at least adapt it.

This stunning concept within the internet that somehow the movie is to, fucking has to, be as good as the comic stupefies me in how much it flies in the face of common scene. We’ve been to the super hero franchise movies we all know how bad they can be. We all know how much they are capable of mangling our precious childhood obsessions, and yet… and yet people still sit there and expect that not to happen.

Guess what its going to happen. A some point this movie is going to do something that is going to crush your enjoyment of the movie. Thats guaranteed. For Robert its the costumes (and lord there is not enough room in the internet for me to transcribe the ‘disagreement’ we had over that topic). For me its a small erk that Owlman lost his beer belly (weakens the character if you ask me). For others it will be something else and the list will grow once the movie comes out.

The fan boys are already rabid about what they don’t like in this movie and it hasn’t come out yet. What does that say about us?

So… You don’t like what you see… then don’t go. But, if you don’t go then you’ll not have the right to bitch. Ah the crux of the conundrum.

Or maybe we can all just suck it up, go watch it and enjoy those bits that we can, ignoring those things that annoy us. You know like we do with so many other things in life like work, or the hospital, or buying coffee… which considering how much I just beaked off I may need more of.

  5. I fucking loved the hell out of this trailer and think y’all are being too nitpicky. The costume changes are sort of trying to nod at comic book movies, much as Watchmen had it’s nods to other comics.

The trailer doesn’t show the colors very well, but Ozymandias is in purple and gold in the other photos I’ve seen.

  6. Sorry Zeek, IMO you’re being entirely too forgiving.

Watchmen is as smart a superhero story as they come.
The movie has already shown that rather than challenge the audience by giving them these characters as-is they are pandering to the average low-brow movie goer.
It’ll be fun I’m sure, but much like 300 was its just not going to be an intelligent film.
Snyder isn’t in the same class as Moore when it comics to artistic genius, hes just really good at retelling comics to a mass audience.

Again, it’ll be a fun flick I’m sure (I enjoyd 300, but the watered down element was in my face) but it won’t give us anything close the intelligent movie adaptation that films like Iron Man, Batman, or even LOTR gave us!

  7. I’m not sure how a film told with most of the same dialogue and events is some how less intelligent. Dig deeper, read a couple Snyder interviews, and you’ll see they’re actually aiming at a direct adaptation with a few liberties taken. The ending is fully intact - something that wouldn’t happen if they were pandering to the average movie goer, that’s for freaking sure.

  8. Why are you assuming I haven’t read the Snyder interviews?
“Dig Deeper” assumes for no reason what so ever that I haven’t already been reading all there is to read, how many Mayfair watchmen sourcebooks do YOU have?
I’m pretty obsessive when it comes to Watchmen, so please don’t make these assumptions sir.

I also worked on the show , and the 2 scenes I was in were entirely made up for the movie.
In one case entirely contradicted Moore’s intention with a certain character.

And frankly the ending of the Watchmen story is exactly what I would expect to be intact.
So did you think that 300 was a smarter piece of entertainment than the Frank Miller version?
Cause I sure as hell didn’t, and the changes that I’m seeing simply lean the flick towards this being the equivalent to 300.
300 had a great deal of the same dialogue, and the same ending.’
And it sure didn’t save it!
Most people that I know didn’t enjoy 300 nearly as much as the comic, yet the same people LOVED Sin City.

    The difference?
Sin City stayed as faithful as possible.
300 tried to be its own thing, and in so doing failed the fans of Millers 300.

But defend Snyder all you want, hes not going to find a way to produce a more intelligent commentary than Alan Moore.
And the Crapper Batman movie inspired Ozymandias outfit proves this hands down.

The whole idea that a story whos primary focus is to comment on Nuclear proliferation, and Present Superheroes in as Mature a light as possible just isn’t what that commercial is selling.

Its selling and action/special effects fiesta, and as I’ve said many times will probably be enjoyable on its own merits, much as 300 was to me.

But as a piece of art its wanting.

  9. And just for the record I’m not telling anybody that’s excited for the movie they shouldn’t be.
Enjoy it all you want, and all the more power to you.
I’m just expressing why for ME, this is missing the ball.

  10. Ah man.
After writing about how different it is I just had to look through Watchmen to confirm that I wasn’t loosing my mind.

In the trailer and in the images shown here:
    http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=17303
We can see how much more emphasis is placed on action scenes in the movie.
In the Prison break issue, Night-Owl and Silk Spectre Both Punch a bad guy each and both in the same panel.
In the Trailer we see Night-Owl leap through the air and boot one in the head and in that Image he looks pretty heavily in battle.

The image of Silk Spectre coming through the ceiling of the burning building from the rescue in ish 7 takes her from guiding people into Archie to somehow coming through the roof or some such?

The more I double check the things I’m unsure of the more and more I see my reservations are warranted.

  11. I think we can all agree that it is safe to say, like most literary works… the movie will never be as good as the book.

Even if it this film is 2 and half hours long, it will be skin and bones compared to a 12 hour HBO series, which I had always envisioned would be the only way to pull this off. Each episode representing one comic and such.

Is this trailer successful? Will this help bring audiences to the show? Will this create hype? Get people taking? I’d say yes.
More importantly, will this encourage more people to seek out the ā€œGraphic Novelā€?
I’d be lying if I didn’t say yes. In fact, Elfsar Comics was cleaned out of all our Watchmen TP’s a short day after this trailer was released. To me, that’s what is most important, not just as being a proprietor of selling books but that more that people will be drawn to this wonderfully smart book and out seek more stories like this. Some may even be exposed to comics for the first time. I was upset to see that this film will not be attached to FCBD 2009. Instead it will be X-Men Origins Wolverine.

I’ll reserved judgment until after I see the film.
Who will be watching the Watchmen?

    I will.

  12. I call it now — The Watchmen is going to be a disappointment. Does that mean I won’t go see it? Well, I can’t let William S. go alone, gawd knows how much he pouts about that! :P

Honestly I just want to hear the end of this but since I am going to SDCC, I am sure it will be the only stupid thing everyone is going to be talking about. F**ck The Watchmen movie and go read the comics / trade or watch the new Motion Comics version.

  13. Sorry when I mean “the end of this” I mean, I wish the movie has come out, ppl act like they did after the 300, rant, rave and then… BE DONE WITH IT!

  14. Oh and even though I am all “hating” the Watchmen trailer, please feel free to rant and rave here if you wish but you won’t convince me that the movie will be any good. Sorry.

  15. Happy Monday everyone,

I want to thank Elsar for his post. One, it wasn’t antagonistic, which mind you I’m not above being here but there’s a post above that goes past even my boundaries for a rant/argument. There’s getting a point across and then there’s being hostile.

Second, a thanks for rendering down what I was trying to get at in my ramble in one line: “like most literary works… the movie will never be as good as the book.” There it is in a nut shell. So why get angry and electronically scream about something we already know. Seriously expecting a movie adaptation to be word/scene perfect is unrealistic, and if you need to be belligerent about an unrealistic concept then you’re not being very sensible. Not to step on any major feelings here but holy crap get a grip.

Third and this is the most important. All I’ve seen so far of this movie is the official website and the trailer. And I’m knowledgeable of the movie industry enough to know that most times the trailers are made by a marketing company not the director of the movie. That trailer told me nothing about the film, it was my own knowledge from having read the comic that filled in missing information and created suppositions. Of course the trailer concentrated on the Special effects and the actions scenes, in Hollywood blockbuster land those are the things that pack the 10-15 year olds into the theater. Those are the things that sell tickets.

You and I have read the comic we know what a glorious story it is. Joe average movie go’er has no clue about the comic all he knows is there’s a movie coming out at sometime. Do you honestly think he wants to know that “The whole idea that a story whos primary focus is to comment on Nuclear proliferation, and Present Superheroes in as Mature a light as possible…”? Of course he doesn’t he just wants to know there will be fun explosions and tits in costumes punching people. To think otherwise is to fly in the face of statistically proven marketing.

Right, final thoughts. The trailer is not the movie, it is just a trailer. It does what a trailer is suppose to do, make people interested in the property. The movie is still out there waiting to be watched. Passing judgment on the movie before it has even been shown… unrealistic.

Oh and Ethan, congratulations on selling out on your stock of the TPB. Its good to see more people will have a chance to be entertained by it.

  16. Thanks William for saying what I couldn’t, my mind is delirious on my new meds until I get used to them..

And I was one of those who scooped up his first copy of the TPB from Ethan, love it to death (Although I’d read it several times before in a well-worn library copy)

  17. Whoa whoa whoa.

    I was belligerent?
I simply defended my stance and asked for someone to not assume I’m not in the know.

Someone just told me to “dig deeper” when I’ve dug as far as there is to dig.

That was an unfair assumption to make of a freaky Watchmen head like myself.

I even made a specific post just to express and re-iterate that I’m not telling anybody that their opinion isn’t valid, and that I’m just expressing how I feel about Watchmen.
I happen to have a great deal of passion for the work.

Of course I’ve certainly not been offered the same concession, and have ya’ll telling me that my opinion is flat out “get a grip” worthy.

Yet I’ve also expressed that it’ll be a fun movie I’m sure, and even that I’m jealous of those who haven’t read the book.

But if you want to be passive aggressive and call me belligerent without naming names thats your perogative.

At least I’m not mincing words dude!

I might also add I’m a pretty friendly guy, and that this is the internet.

Theres no need to read hostility where none is intended.
Words are words, whats between them is generated by the imagination!

I apologize if feeling were hurt, but my credibility and understanding of the issue was flat out attacked and last I checked we all have a right to defend ourselves!

    Get a grip?
I have a pretty solid one, but thanks for the tongue in cheek advice, and the assumption of emotional immaturity!

And really it seems that theres a mutual love of Watchmen here so why turn on one another?
I’m just doing what I always do and offer my straight up 100% from the gut opinion.

Lets take a step back folks and not make this about personal attacks.

(especially since they seem aimed at me! )

    :)

Anyways I’ll step away from this one and I apologize Robert for being the inadvertent cause of hostilities!

  18. Alright. I do not want to close the comments on this blog. Lets all breathe, its all good if you want to take the piss or rant about the Watchmen trailer/movie/comic/graphic novel but no personal attacks!

Thanks to Hart for his apology but it shouldn’t have been needed to be said. William S, Zeek and Ethan all made good points but lets not make any attacks on anyone pls. Even if I did so, I am sorry.

Kudo’s to Ethan on selling out the trades and lots of great points by William S.

Oh and the full movie screen version of the Watchmen trailer made me queezy! No joke, I almost puked up after it was over so yeah…

  19. chojinotaku Says:

Sooooo… I saw Dark Knight on Monday, and finally saw the Watchmen trailer on the big screen. My opinion aside, there were a couple of ladies sitting right behind me that, as the trailer ended, I overheard say “Uh… I don’t get it.”
Now, my buddies and I (speaking about this after the movie) are fairly certain that they understood it was a superhero movie, but the plot was entirely lost on them. Watching the trailer again, I can see why. I personally know what the plot to Watchmen is, but many others who see the trailer prolly aren’t going to have a clue.
    Which leads me to ask:
Do you think a more cohesive trailer should have been made (bearing in mind that the film is still nearly a year away), or do you think (as I do) that this pretty much for the fans. If it is mainly for the fans, than judging by the above posts it may be backfiring.

  20. You’ve asked two distinct questions there. One about the production of the trailer and another about the reasoning behind making the film in the first place.

I can only speculate on why the movie was made beyond the typical Hollywood greed statements. I would have to rely on others deeper into the minutia of the Internet to back me on this but isn’t Watchmen the number 1 selling TPB? If so then it’s an easy guess that the Hollywood money men looking for the next hot property saw that and went “If it sells that much as a comic imagine what it would do as a movie.” Which means it wasn’t made for the fans at all. Beyond Del Toro stating he was a fan and that’s why he made the first Hellboy movie I don’t think any of the money men made a single superhero film for the fans. They’re in it for the money. (More later need to go to work.)

  21. Anyways as I was speculating I don’t think the producers are in it to make movies for the fans, the occasional director might. Del Toro is on record on the DVD as saying he’s a fan, the director of Iron man was as well a fan. If Snyder is a fan I don’t know, although he has said in interviews that he’s doing his best to be true to the material. Will he, has he? we’ll find out.

The trailer doesn’t really tell us, does it? Which leads to your other question, should there have been a more cohesive trailer? I’d say yes. I think we’re all hoping this movie will be good, like Dark Knight good, but we dread that it won’t. So we want the trailer to allay our fears, prove to us that the movie’s not going to suck. I felt that while waiting for the Iron man trailer and Hellboy 2. I feel that now.

The trailer did what it was suppose to, let Joe Public know there’s another superhero movie coming soon and it’s got boobs and explosions in it. Later on hopefully we’ll get another trailer that will tell them that it also has a poignant social commentary story arc within it as well as some of the greatest characters ever created. And then maybe we’ll breath easier.

(Or we’ll continue to hate the re-vamped costumes and let that get in the way. Warmth and love to you Robert while at SDCC and I’m not. :P )

  22. Just for the record its not the revamped outfits that bother me so much as the choices behind them and the direction these revamps have taken.
Night-Owl challenges the audience top accept a middle aged man with a realistic physique as a viable superhero.
In fact I’d argue that hes the only real superhero in Watchmen.

A slim unrealistic version just propagates the soul crushing concept that if you don’t have a perfect body you can’t be heroic.

I do agree though that Watchmen is doing its job very well so far.
Its just too bad Alan Moore got screwed out of ownership of these characters he created and doesn’t see a penny, and has no creative control.
Cause if that was the case even if it was as-is I’d really keep my mouth shut if I knew it was good enough for Moore and his vision and message were intact.

    Oh dammitt!
I said I’d left this discussion!
    :)
