Oh and don’t think I always agree with what Hartley mentions — I don’t and that is good ’cause otherwise we would all be Marvel fricken Zombies!

  1. Hey Rob, I’m goin down to SDCC as well, lets meet up down there dude!
    And yeah I HATE Yes-men.
Like what you like, and love what ya love, but “just agreeing with” me is flat out dumb, and weak-willed!
And just for the record I’m more of a DC man than a Marvel dude!
    No Marvel Zombie here sir!
In fact I actually prefer the momentum in Final Crisis moreso than Secret Invasion!
SI started brilliantly and hasn’t shined as brightly as the 1st ish since.
Whereas Final Crisis was screwed by having all of its 1st ish big moments revealed in the plethora of Countdown related crap, but has more than made up for it with an outstanding #2 and a Brilliant Tie in ish with Requiem!

  2. Love to meet up while at SDCC.

For me, both Marvel & DC have left a bad taste in my mouth re: the summer events. Next year while I am in Europe, I want both the big companies to go back to the summer Annual events, no more of this 50 comics plus the main series bullshit!

Oh and I know you are more of a DC fan, I am as well but lately I have noticed that I am enjoying more and more Marvel stuff which is kinda bothersome.

  3. I do miss the annual, but I sure don’t miss those summer Annual Events from the late 80’s and 90’s like Atlantis Attacks, Bloodlines, the Terminatrix Objective, that incredibly lame DC Apes series of Annuals and many many more…

They all pretty much entirely sucked balls as a greater whole, and didn’t fare so well on an individual level either.

I love the classic self contained annual though, and the 80 page giant as well!
Especially when its a single story 80 pg-er!
    Those are f-in great!

  4. You’re absolutely right about how much those annual events did suck. Recently thanks to a residence move I’ve had the opportunity to get access to my collection again and like a true comic book geek felt compelled to index what I own. I came across a long box full of just annuals and took the time to re-read some of them Bloodlines and Atlantis Attacks mainly. Wow they were bad, I mean really bad. But then I realized that they look that bad because the industry in its writing matured since those years.

Comparing now to then, how Secret Invasion is being presented (1 main title, with auxiliary Mini-series) would have worked within the scope of those annual runs. One story running through the whole with side stories specific to certain characters is what SI is doing and exactly what Atlantis Attacks did. Final Crisis is using the same formula as well just with more mini’s. So although the Annual sucked because of their writing, the basic idea is solid.

  5. Yeah the idea was great, but it was clearly just a cash-grab with little thought put into it.

I wouldn’t say that Atlantis attacks was exactly like the current events, as there were no book-ends just a series or annuals, but Blood-lines followed that formula of the main story being told in book-end anuals.

I think what the old-school cash grab events taught the big 2 was that we won’t buy shit for shits sake, and that these big events need to be treated with the respect the original cross-universe events Crisis on Infinite Earths and Secret Wars did.

Regardless of opinion the current big events (with the exception of Countdown, WTF was that crap!?!?!!?) Marvel and DC have really done thier best to make these events worth our time.
And for my dollar they’ve succeeded!
