Best Bang Reborn #4: July 9th comics

Best Bang Reborn #4

It is a crazy day but last night, after seeing Hellboy II, I got home late and read all my comics so I could get the Best Bang Reborn #4: Comics for July 9th out for today! From Final Crisis: Requiem for Martian Manhunter to Nick Fury coming out in Secret Invasion #4 over to Trinity!

Again I picked up my stuff from Hourglass Comics out in Port Moody.

Guardians of the Galaxy #3 (Marvel) - YAY! Great action packed issue with much less funny scenes than the last issue but lots more StarHawk. Yes. StarHawk! What does it mean? Well this was a great tease that had me interested but that wasn’t even the big twist ending which made me smile. I love where this series is going with the Universal Church, Vance Astro, StarHawk and the rest of this new team of Guardians of the Galaxy! Great job!
5 - Best Bang Reborn: A Great issue!

Final Crisis: Requiem - Batman’s moment with J’onn J’onzz

Final Crisis: Requiem (DC) - As much as I lamb basted this book before it came out, I really enjoyed this issue. Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Manke / Christian Alamy did a great job on the final goodbye to J’onn J’onzz. Do I believe that dead is dead? Nope but this was a very solid book and glad it came out. Did I want more of this within Final Crisis?! Hell YEAH!
5 - Best Bang Reborn: A Great issue!

Urban Myths #1 (Image) - One of the new comics that Top Cow is putting out in their new Pilot Season 2 where a handful of new books, new series are coming out with issue #1’s and then they are voted upon in August, I think the final two become full blown series. I think that Urban Myth is a solid book and I would read more of the stories of this detective Jack Medusa in this mixed world of myth/fantasy and real world. Very good and solid read.
5 - Best Bang Reborn: A Great issue!

Detective Comics #846 (DC) - Batman and Catwoman deliver a strong issue with the buildup of the Hush and more on the “Heart of Hush” storyline begins. I loved the bits with Hush/Tim Elliot’s past and the ties of that with Hush now. I love that Hush believes that he is the ultimate end of the Batman which is nice.
4 - Best Bang Reborn: Good issue!

Captain Britain & M13 #3 (Marvel) - I really enjoyed this issue but what was built up over 2 issues seemed be let out like a animal balloon in this issue. Just when you thought that the Skrulls were going to take over England and Arcadia along comes…. (what is the name of this book?)! A touch disappointing because I thought it was building to another solution on stopping or delaying the Skrulls.
4 - Best Bang Reborn: Good issue!

Joker’s Asylum: Penguin #1 (DC) - Jason Aaron and Jason Pearson deliver a strong issue about the life and times of The Penguin (through The Joker’s point-of-view) which made for a great little issue. Great job!
4 - Best Bang Reborn: Good issue!

Nova #15 (Marvel) - I am loving this title and I enjoyed this story but the artwork was clashing with the story at times, I thought, and it felt it was hard to then read through the issue. The big news that WorldMind goes offline will make this book and Nova more interesting as it continues. A nice fresh point of view on Galactus and The Silver Surfer. Very fun but I wish the artwork was better.
4 - Best Bang Reborn: Good issue!

Justice Society of America #17 - GOG!

Justice Society of America #17 (DC) The Kingdom Come storyline continues with Gog still walking through Africa, healing and changing lives. I enjoyed how Mister Terrific is questioning faith, the nice mix of JSA and JLA with Hawkman and Hawkgirl and the point of view the world seems to be coming to grips with a God walking around in Africa with the US Army thoughts and such. Very strong issue and I am interested where this goes.
4 - Best Bang Reborn: Good issue!

Green Arrow & Black Canary #10 (DC) - I am really enjoying this series and I will be wondering how good it will be if/when Judd Winick leaves the title. I hope Mike Norton keeps on the book as I love his artwork and that will keep some stability on this title. Very enjoyable wham-bam issue with Batman and Plastic Man and the Arrow family still searching for Conner Hawke!
4 - Best Bang Reborn: Good issue!

The Last Defenders #5 of 6 (Marvel) - Hellstorm, She-Hulk and Krang – how could this book not be good? I loved seeing Kyle Richmond sans costume through-out the issue with a nice buildup for the big final issue. Is this the end of the Defenders? I mean given that Mark Millar has such a hard-on for The Defenders, I am thinking… NO!
4 - Best Bang Reborn: Good issue!

Secret Invasion #4 - Nicky Fury action!

Secret Invasion #4 of 8 (Marvel) - The Black Widow / Wolverine scene was great, The Hood rounding his team up ’cause “no more earth is bad for business, yes?” is one of those great Bendis lines. Was though enough to make this a good comic? Sadly no. The Nick Fury team pages were okay, the floating Agent Brand hitting a communication room inside a Skrull spaceship seemed 2 pages too long, the Marie Hill twist was a bit of a yawner, the Yellowjacket bit made me smirk but where are the rest of the Initiative in the book? The Reed Richards opening is the prelude to another story which I hope will be fleshed out WITHIN SI and not in another SI mini-series but I won’t be holding my breathe!
3 - Best Bang Reborn: Decent issue!

Trinity #6 (DC) A stronger issue than the #2 - 5, I thought and it gave a nice fleshing out of all three of the DC Trinity of Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. Even thought this was a stronger issue and solid, I think I am done with a weekly series so I will be watching to see how it goes but I think I will take a break for a bit.
3 - Best Bang Reborn: Decent issue!

Eternals #2 (Marvel) - I like where this series is going with all the Eternals who have come out of their shells (what does that say) and searching for the others. The only issue I had was the scene with Sersi and Iron Man, if you never read Neil Gaimen’s The Eternals - this may not make sense unless you thought that this was the same Sersi character who was an Avenger before (which she is but from what I understood, she can’t remember that life clearly) so that kinda bugged me. I hate when they refer to an obvious connection to a previous book, I mean for new readers it may not work. My only issue otherwise a strong story and artwork!
3 - Best Bang Reborn: Decent issue!

Trades

America Virgin 4: Around the World (Vertigo) - I am just getting into the final trade of the series and I am very enjoying this book. I really enjoyed this series and thought that Steven T. Seagle did a great job on this series and it is too bad it had to end.

Ms. Marvel 4: Monster Smash (Marvel) - Brian Reed does a great job on Ms. Marvel and this trade brought me up to speed where I started picking up the series as a monthly so it was a good refresher on Carol Danvers, the hero and SHIELD agent.

Next week

Lots comes out but I don’t know how much I will get as I will be on holidays on route to San Diego Comic Con! So don’t expect any Best Bang Reborn issues for a few weeks!

  1. Jesus Christ Fury’s gun would make Rob Liefeld cry in terror.

  2. Finally got around to reading Final Crisis: Requiem. That was a nice bit of work. I’ll miss my second favorite DC hero, but like you I’m not expecting him to be dead long. I mean at the rate they’re going the next crisis event will be ready to happen as soon as this one has ended. Yup Countdown to the count up weekly and 52 disposable plotline mini series and then 8 issues of crap are just around the corner as soon as Final Crisis staggers to the finish line and we move on to Extreme Crisis: Give us more money.

That’s when they’ll bring J’onn back as a masked villain secretly working to make the DCU worth selling your soul to. I suspect there will be an invasion involved.
