Other than the lone exception you've used, I'm actually surprised at how corny the first few pages sound. "There had better be coffee or I will simply believe there is no God"? "Stay here and attend your dying love"? "We'll end up in Oakland, and then I'll simply have to kill myself"? Bland, typical, and just plain corny. I was hoping for a different reaction because I've heard such nice things about Ellis, but I can already tell that his style isn't my personal taste. The art -- especially the overly plump lips -- is unappealing to me as well. I don’t see the dialogue as being “pretty smart” at all.
