Best Bang for Nov. 28th
Two Image titles and a DC title (and not one you would expect) take the honors in this week’s Best Bang books for yer Comic Buck!
Casanova #11 (Image) - Stunning art and a nice assassination issue with a build up to a big clash between Father / Daughter or Good / Evil. This is a title I have been on and off about but this issue got me hooked right back into the action.
Bomb Queen IV: Suicide Bomber #3 (Image) - Another home run issue with a good mix of comedy, action and story background without loosing itself in any one section. I was amazed at the billion panels of action and loved the ending! Thank you Jimmie Robinson for this book. Please keep them coming!!
Death of the New Gods #3 (DC) - Jim Starlin has a wonderful feel for these characters. Who would have thought I would be writing about how good Jim Starlin writes DC characters? This was a nice issue with good pacing, action and suspense. I am actually more interested in what is going to happen now more than ever with the New Gods as I love Darksied as a villain!
Other Good Books
X-Men #205 (Marvel) - Okay this almost made top 3 but didn’t because I am not ready to fully support X-Men just yet. One issue does not make an mutant event! That all said - this issue had that good old X-Men feel to it. The various stories, the X-Men being hit from all angles, the surprises and the big reveal at the end was entertaining of all the Messiah CrapleX comics so far! Helps to have Chris Bachalo’s artwork as well - I love his stuff!
Batman & The Outsiders #2 (DC) - Again another comic that almost made my top 3 books for the week but didn’t. Why not? Well I think it is ’cause I cannot break my top 3 list. Besides that this is a solid book. Good action, great dialog and good story that doesn’t really end and has enough loose ends from two issues than many of the titles on the shelves. I love the idea that Martian Manhunter kinda sticks it to Batman to build up to the next issue. Very solid!
Faker #5 (Vertigo) - Okay, I think maybe I got what is going on in this issue but I am not too sure, pass me whatever drugs these kids are on (maybe its Key-23) and I will get it in no time! I enjoy it enough to keep reading on although I am kinda WTF page after page. It is kinda addictive.
Gotham Underground #2 (DC) - Wow lots of DC comics this week. I really like this book as it seem to finally show the other side of the Batbooks, the villains with Matches Malone trying to figure his way through things. How this works in the continuity, I don’t know and really I don’t care. Good pacing, decent artwork and nice twists. I look forward to more of these issues!
Batman #671 (DC) - Continuing the Ra’s al Ghul story with Ra’s and Bats against the Sensei. Decent story. Artwork was okay, nothing special but for me it was the fact that Nanda Parbat has a Fountain of Life… so why is Vic Sage aka The Question dead?! Like WTF?! This is why no one dies in comics - they have storylines like this out there!
So-So Books…
Countdown 22 (DC) - They are trying to make this a good book but its really hard. I do not shive a git about Jimmy Olsen so those pages do nothing for me. The rest is passable and really only makes me question why I keep buying this. I think its the hope that it will start to get better…
Batman & Robin, the boy wonder #8 (DC) - This is up to issue 8 now? Wow. Best part of this book was Batman’s thoughts on Green Lantern. I have to agree! The Joker was okay but nothing to write home about. See how it plays out.
Foolkiller #2 (Marvel Max) - A decent Marvel / Vertigo comic about vigilantes with a twist on building the character development. Nice but I need to see more issues to really get a feel for this book. Right now its two angles of the same story really.
Green Lantern Corps #18 (DC) - The New ION vs Superman Prime. Did anyone really see this fight? It reminded me of the blurry and off-camera fight that happened in the beginning of Batman Begins movie with the young Bruce Wayne. It kinda happened all over the Earth and then it was over and nothing coming out of it. Not very dramatic.
Not working for me…
Black Panther #32 (Marvel) - Maybe it is me but this time / alternate world traveling Fantastic Four book inside the pages of Black Panther does not interest me. Bring the characters back home and into the mix of the current Marvel Universe post-Civil Bore era please.
52 Aftermanth: Crime Bible #2 (DC) - Um… okay I get it - the new Question is a lesbian. Did the entire issue need to keep banging that idea home? Okay, I get it - this issue is about LUST but come on… it gets boring after the first three panels. Lets get on with giving the character an actual series with good stories please.
Teen Titans #53 (DC) - Maybe I am tired of the alternate reality version of Titan X storylines. I think the first time this was done it was entertaining, now they have like a billion alternate Titans taking on like 4 current titans and they still do not stop / get / kill / maim / destroy / capture them. Ho hum.
The Sensational Spider-Man #41 (Marvel) - One More Day part 3. Finally the hook has come into play and now to see how it ends. *yawn*
Trade Watch
A great buy this week was Marvel’s ESSENTIAL SPIDER-MAN vol. 8 - Great stories by Len Wein, Bill Mantlo, Marv Wolfman plus artwork by Ross Andru, Sal Buscema and many more. I really enjoy going through this book!
