Best Bang for Aug 29th Comics

Best Bang for Aug 29th Comics

Fantastic Four #546, Manhunter: Origins Vol. 3 Trade and Avengers The Initiative #5 are the only books this week to make my list. The rest are good and okay but not top dogs.

I enjoy spreading the love with my addiction so this weeks comics comes from a great store in North Vancouver, Comic Scene, which you can find here:

I could not find Bomb Queen IV… yet. I will though, I will!

The Best Bang for your Buck

Fantastic Four #546 (Marvel) - Good interaction, great characters, action, fun and good humor. I am sad that Dwayne McDuffie is leaving the title. Both his writing and the artwork makes this one of Marvels best title on the shelves these days. Story: The Frightful Four continue their attack and it ends with the upcoming end of the Universe. This is what the FF is made for!

Avengers The Initiative #5 (Marvel) - Another great issue with “The Red Team” and just like how good this title is in comparison to Civil Bore, another great POV on World War Bunk with this story! I really enjoy this and wonder how powerful it would be without the stunning artwork of Stefano Caselli and colours by Daniele Rudoni. I also dug the lettering by VC’s Joe Caramagna. I read, in the latest Write Now #16, on how this issue is written (plot first, script after artwork is done), and as I cannot wrap my head around that concept, I think it works for this title!

Manhunter: Origins Vol. 3 Trade (DC Comics) - A very good trade for a series I got into late in the floppies so its great to catch up via the trade. I really enjoy Marc Andreyko & the various artists bring along great stories with a strong character in Kate Spencer, federal prosecutor by day and crime fighting vigilant by night. Pick this up and enjoy!

The Good

Countdown to Adventure #1 (DC Comics) - This went from flipping through in my LCS to buying it. Two great stories with Adam Strange and Animal Man / StarFire. Good to see those characters again with the good 52 feel. The Forerunner story was okay, nothing to write home about and as I am not reading Countdown anymore, I couldn’t care less about her and her origins.

Outsiders: Five of a Kind #4 / Wonder Woman and Grace #1 (DC Comics) - A decent story and nice artwork which spins more out of Amazons Attack then Countdown (like the cover mentions) in which both these two heroes are sent by The Batman to disable some traps leftover from Amazons Attack in Cleveland, Ohio. I have to say I really enjoyed this issue with Wonder Woman and Grace and a finally this bloody non-Outsiders Outsiders title is done and the team is finally built.

Amazons Attack #6 of 6 (DC Comics) - I really did not mind this issue. The final battle with Wonder Woman and her mother, Circe, the goddess Athena and a nice twist at the end all worked for me. I really liked the artwork by Pete Woods.

The So-So

Gene Simons Dominatrix #1 (IDW) - I picked this up for two reasons: 1. I wanted to see what a Gene Simon’s comic would be like and 2. I really like the artist Flavio Hoffe. Nice colouring by Alex Garner as well. A origin story of a dominatrix becoming a super powered hero(?).

World War Bunk.. I mean World War Hulk: X-Men #3 of 3 (Marvel) - Good action but I guess I am done with the Hulk storyline when it seems that the mini-series is going to be a let down and so was the climax of this issue. Only good thing from this was seeing The Juggernaut back.

Batman Annual #26 (DC Comics) - As much as I wanted this title to be great, I almost fell asleep reading this. I used to enjoy reading Peter Milligan’s work but man this was just boring. I know it was a origin issue but wow what a yawner.

Teen Titans #50 (DC Comics) - This issue dropped from Best Bang to just so-so and for one reason. ENOUGH WITH THE DEATH OF BART! Frig if this continues then great, fine, I won’t be spending my money reading about it month after month. I did enjoy the small bits and pieces of fun and the Geoff Johns story is the feel I want back in the title, the good fun and not the depressing boring Emo book that it is now. I hope the Future Titans upcoming storyline kicks some sense into these characters and go back to good fun with great stories.

The Bad

52 Aftermath: The Four Horsemen #1 (DC Comics) - I don’t know why this issue did not resonate with me, perhaps it was the artwork but I found the issue very boring and slow paced. I just didn’t care about any part of the story. It seemed like the building of the Four Horsemen storyline just took too long for me. I don’t know if I will continue to pick this up next issue.

Black Panther #30 (Marvel) - Dear Reginald Hudlin, Please be done with the Zombie Marvel Heroes in Galactus gear! I never want to see them again. Frig I hate Zombies! Please get back to the Black Panther stories again post-Civil Bore world and hopefully hop, skip and jump past World War Bunk. To me this is a lame duck Fantastic Four issue and not on par with the other great Black Panther issues of late.

The Dropped

Countdown this week - Again, flipped through this in my guest-starring LCS and I was right about not picking this up. Looked very boring.
